Best Time for Photos in Curaçao: Light, Weather and Crowds
The best time for photos in Curaçao: golden hour and sunset times, dry and rainy months, trade winds, and how to avoid cruise day crowds in Willemstad.

The best time for photos in Curaçao is the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset, when the light is soft and warm and the beaches and streets are quieter. For the season, February through June is the driest stretch, but because Curaçao sits outside the hurricane belt and rarely gets long rain, you can plan a photoshoot any month of the year. The bigger factor on most days is crowds, especially in Willemstad when cruise ships are in port.
At a glance
- Best time of day: sunrise to about two hours after, and the last 60 to 90 minutes before sunset.
- Hardest light: late morning to mid-afternoon, when the sun is high and the UV index often hits extreme levels.
- Sunset: roughly 6:10 pm to 6:30 pm from October through January, a little later in summer. Curaçao uses Atlantic Standard Time all year, with no daylight saving.
- Driest months: February through June.
- Wettest months: October through December, usually short afternoon showers rather than all-day rain.
- Quietest Willemstad: early morning or after the cruise ships leave in the late afternoon.
- Quietest beaches: weekday mornings. Popular beaches fill up with local families on weekends.
Best time of day for photos in Curaçao
Sunrise and early morning
Morning is our favorite time for portraits in Curaçao. The light is soft, the air is a little cooler, and the most famous spots are almost empty. On the west coast beaches the sun rises behind the land, which gives you even, gentle light on the water and on faces.
Sunrise falls between about 6:25 am and 7:00 am through most of the fall and winter months. Arrive 20 to 30 minutes before to set up, and you will have the first hour of light to yourself at most beaches.
Midday
Curaçao sits close to the equator, so the midday sun is strong and nearly overhead. It creates harsh shadows under eyes and noses, and it can wash out colors. The official Curaçao tourism weather guide notes that the UV index regularly reaches 11 or higher around midday.
Midday is not a total loss. It is the best time for underwater photos and for showing off the turquoise color of the water from above, since the high sun lights up the sandy bottom. For people photos, look for open shade under trees, archways and building overhangs.
Golden hour and sunset
The last hour before sunset is the classic time for couples and family photos. The light turns warm and low, skin tones glow, and the colorful buildings of Willemstad look their best. Because Curaçao is in the tropics, sunset happens fast and twilight is short, so plan to be in place well before the sun reaches the horizon.
In our area, sunset is around 6:10 pm in late October and early December and around 6:30 pm in January, with later sunsets toward June, when days are longest. Check a sun calculator such as timeanddate.com for your exact date.

Best time of year for photos in Curaçao
February to June: the driest months
These months bring the most reliable sunshine and clear skies. The landscape on this semi-arid island is at its driest, so expect golden and green-gray hills rather than lush green. For beach and city photos, this is the easiest season to plan around.
July to September: warm and bright
These are the hottest months, with highs that often reach the low 30s Celsius (around 90°F). Skies stay mostly sunny and the sea is often calm on the west coast. Plan shoots for early morning or near sunset to stay comfortable.
October to December: the wetter months
This is Curaçao’s rainy season, but it rarely means a ruined day. Showers usually pass in 10 to 30 minutes and are often followed by dramatic clouds and fresher air, which can make for beautiful photos. The hills also turn greener after a few weeks of rain.
Weather details that affect your photos
Trade winds
Steady easterly trade winds blow most of the year, usually around 12 to 18 mph. They keep the island comfortable, but they also move hair, dresses and scarves. That can look wonderful in a flowing dress photo, or frustrating if you want a sleek look. Bring hair ties, avoid very light fabrics if you want a calm look, and choose the sheltered west coast beaches for gentler conditions.
Heat and humidity
Humidity sits around 75 to 85 percent through the year. Bring blotting papers, a small towel and water, and plan outfit changes in an air-conditioned spot if you can.
Clouds
A thin layer of clouds is a gift for portraits because it softens the light. Heavy clouds near sunset can either block the color completely or light up in pink and orange, so it is worth waiting a few minutes after the sun sets before you pack up.
Avoiding crowds in your photos
Willemstad and cruise days
Handelskade, the Queen Emma Bridge and the streets of Punda are busiest when cruise ships are in port, usually from mid-morning until the afternoon all-aboard. If your schedule is flexible, check the cruise calendar and plan city photos for early morning or for a day with no ships. If you are arriving on a cruise yourself, go out early, right after the ship clears, before the streets fill up.
Beaches
Many popular beaches are quiet on weekday mornings and busier on weekends and public holidays, when local families head to the coast. Smaller spots like Little Knip can get lively on weekends. Arriving early is the simplest way to get a clean background at any beach.
Our recommended plan
- Book city photos in Willemstad for early morning or the last hour of light.
- Book beach photos for sunrise or the late afternoon on a weekday.
- Keep midday for snorkeling, lunch and rest.
- Leave a backup slot in your trip in case of a passing shower.

FAQ
What is the best time of day for photos in Curaçao?
The hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset. The light is soft and flattering, and popular spots are much quieter than at midday.
What time is sunset in Curaçao?
It varies through the year. Sunset is around 6:10 pm in late fall, around 6:30 pm in January, and later in early summer. Curaçao does not use daylight saving time.
Does rain season ruin photos in Curaçao?
Rarely. Rain from October to December usually comes as short showers, and the clouds afterward often make the sky more interesting.
When is Willemstad least crowded for photos?
Early in the morning and on days with no cruise ships in port. Late afternoon also gets quieter once passengers head back to their ships.
Is the wind a problem for photos in Curaçao?
It can be on the east side and in exposed spots. On the west coast beaches and in sheltered city streets, it is usually manageable, and a little breeze adds movement to dresses and hair.
