25 Best Things to Do in Curaçao (2026 Local Guide)

The best things to do in Curaçao, from Willemstad's UNESCO waterfront and Hato Caves to turtle beaches, Klein Curaçao and Christoffel National Park.

The best things to do in Curaçao combine colorful Willemstad, a UNESCO World Heritage city, with wild west coast beaches, sea turtles, caves and national parks. If you only have one day, walk the Handelskade waterfront and cross the Queen Emma Bridge, then head west to snorkel with turtles and swim at a beach like Playa Kenepa. With more time, add Klein Curaçao, Christoffel National Park and the island’s quieter coves.

We live and work here, showing visitors around the island every week. This list sorts our favorite things to do in Curaçao by area, so you can group stops and spend less time in the car.

Quick tips before you plan

  • Split the island in two: Willemstad and the southeast beaches on one day, the west coast (Westpunt, Christoffel, Shete Boka) on another.
  • Start early: mornings are cooler, calmer and less crowded at beaches and viewpoints.
  • Currency: Curaçao now uses the Caribbean guilder (XCG), which replaced the Antillean guilder in 2025. US dollars are widely accepted.
  • Check opening times: museums, caves and parks set their own hours and can change them, so confirm on the official site before you go.
  • Bring water shoes: many beaches and snorkel entries are rocky.

Things to do in Willemstad

Willemstad’s historic center, harbor and four old districts (Punda, Otrobanda, Scharloo and Pietermaai) were listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1997. Most of these stops are walkable from each other.

1. Walk the Handelskade waterfront

The row of pastel merchant houses along Punda’s waterfront is the postcard view of Curaçao. See it from the Otrobanda side for the classic wide shot, then walk the promenade itself for cafés and close-up details.

2. Cross the Queen Emma Bridge

Built in 1888, this pedestrian bridge floats on pontoons and swings open so ships can enter St. Anna Bay. When it is open for a ship, a free ferry carries pedestrians across. The bridge was taken out for a major renovation in 2026, so check its status before you visit.

3. Look up at the Queen Juliana Bridge

Opened in 1974, the Queen Juliana Bridge rises about 185 feet above St. Anna Bay. It is for vehicles, but it makes a dramatic backdrop from the waterfront below.

4. Explore Otrobanda’s alleys

Across the bay from Punda, Otrobanda has narrow lanes, restored houses and plenty of street art. It is quieter than Punda and great for a slow wander.

5. Visit Rif Fort

Built in 1828 to guard the harbor entrance, Rif Fort now houses shops and restaurants and sits a short walk from the cruise terminals. It is part of the UNESCO-listed area.

6. See the sand floor at Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue

Completed in 1732, this Punda synagogue is often described as the oldest surviving synagogue in the Americas and has been in use ever since. Its floor is covered in sand, a detail visitors rarely forget.

7. Stroll Scharloo and Pietermaai

Scharloo is known for grand merchant mansions, while Pietermaai mixes restored colonial houses with boutique hotels, restaurants and evening atmosphere. Both are ideal for architecture lovers.

8. Learn the island’s history at Kura Hulanda Museum

Located in Otrobanda, less than a mile from the cruise terminals, Kura Hulanda Museum focuses on the history of the region, including the transatlantic slave trade. Plan for at least an hour.

9. Taste blue Curaçao at Landhuis Chobolobo

The historic Chobolobo country house is where the original Curaçao liqueur is made. Guided tours explain the laraha orange peel behind the drink, and there is a bar for tastings.

10. Book a photoshoot on the waterfront

Willemstad’s colors make it one of the most photogenic cities in the Caribbean. A short private session on the waterfront gives you vacation photos you are actually in. Our list of unique photoshoot ideas in Curaçao has inspiration for every style.

Things to do on the west coast

11. Swim with sea turtles at Playa Piskado

At this small fishing beach in Westpunt, green sea turtles feed in the shallows close to shore. Keep your distance, never feed or touch them, and go early to beat the groups.

12. Relax at Playa Kenepa (Grote Knip)

Bright white sand, turquoise water and a viewpoint above the bay make Grote Knip one of the island’s most photographed beaches. Its little sister, Kleine Knip, is just down the road. Planning family photos here? See our guide to a family photoshoot at Playa Kenepa.

13. Snorkel Playa Lagun

A narrow cove between rock walls with calm water and reef fish along the edges. Turtles are sometimes seen here in the early morning.

14. Find the reef at Playa Kalki

Near the island’s northwestern tip, Playa Kalki has a reef within swimming distance of the beach and is a favorite with snorkelers and divers.

15. Swim into the Blue Room cave

This sea cave near Playa Santa Cruz glows blue when sunlight filters through the water. You can reach it by boat, kayak or by swimming along the coast. Only go in calm conditions.

16. Hike Christoffelberg

At 372 meters (1,220 feet), Christoffelberg is the highest point on Curaçao and sits inside Christoffel National Park. Start early, as the trail is hot and steep near the top, and check the park’s current trail rules before you go.

17. Watch the waves at Shete Boka National Park

On the wild north coast, waves crash into limestone inlets called boka. Boka Tabla, where you can watch the surf surge into a cave, is the most popular stop. Swimming is not possible here, but the views are spectacular.

18. Spot flamingos at Sint Willibrordus

The salt pans near the village of Sint Willibrordus often have flamingos wading in the shallows. Bring a zoom lens and view them from the roadside without approaching.

19. Drive the Westpunt coast

The road through the island’s western end passes hills, cactus landscapes and small beaches. Rent a car or join a private tour and stop wherever the view catches your eye.

Things to do in the southeast and offshore

20. Go underground at Hato Caves

These limestone caves near the airport are visited on guided tours and are one of the most popular island tour stops for cruise passengers.

21. Snorkel the Tugboat wreck

At Tugboat Beach near Caracasbaai, a small sunken tugboat sits in shallow water less than 50 meters from shore. It is one of the easiest wreck snorkels in the Caribbean. Wear water shoes for the rocky entry.

22. Spend a day on Klein Curaçao

This uninhabited island, about 1.5 hours away by boat, has a long white beach, an abandoned lighthouse and turtles in the surrounding water. Expect a full day trip.

23. Beach-hop Mambo Beach and Jan Thiel

East of Willemstad, these lively beach clubs have loungers, restaurants and calm swimming areas. They are close to town and easy for an afternoon.

24. Unwind at Cas Abao

A wide, well-kept beach on the west side of the island with soft sand and clear water. It is a good choice when you want comfort and facilities.

25. End the day with golden hour photos

The hour before sunset turns Willemstad’s facades and the west coast cliffs warm and glowing. Pick one spot, arrive early and stay until the sky changes color.

How to fit more into a short trip

Curaçao is bigger than many visitors expect, and the west coast highlights are a long drive from Willemstad. If you are short on time, or arriving by cruise ship, a private tour that combines a turtle snorkel, a cave swim and a top beach covers several items on this list in one outing. For families, our guide to the best family photo locations in Curaçao also highlights kid-friendly stops.
